Owning a caravan is a serious financial investment that you want to protect from accident, fire, theft, and loss. Another consideration would be to include third-party insurance on your policy. Since caravans are recreational vehicles in their own class, you want to work with an insurance company that specializes in this area.

The highest number of claims comes from theft so this is the number on coverage to buy. To enjoy discounts from most UK insurance companies, you can have an electronic alarm or some type of “Stop Theft” device installed where the car could be tracked. Obviously, as the caravan owner, you too need to take certain precautions such as never leaving the caravan unattended. This can be done by fitting a wheel camp or hitch lock onto the caravan. In fact, some UK insurance companies will require that you use one or the other. To give you an idea of what a good policy would look like, consider the following, which is a policy that would cover damage to the caravan or any equipment and/or contents.

  • Coverage for touring and storage for the full year
  • Up to 60 days of free European coverage
  • £2,000,000 third party liability cover
  • £10,000 fatal accident benefit
  • As much as £600 (£20 per day) for temporary accommodations
  • Cost of moving your caravan to the nearest competent repairer, which should include the cost of repatriation from abroad as well
  • Weather damage to awnings
  • Family and friend coverage as well as additional excess, which would total £200
  • Standard policy excess £100 on all claims
  • New for old on caravans up to five years old, typically available at standard premium rates. Your caravan must be less than two years old at inception and covered for the current list price of the new replacement.

Motor Home Insurance

Like caravans, motor homes are also used for recreational purposes. Therefore, different types of insurance are very important, to include non-fault road traffic accident that would involve the motor home. By keeping the right third-party insurance on the motor home, you will be able to enjoy traveling without worry. A good policy would cover £50,000 of legal expenses to pursue civil claims for the following:

  • Death or personal injury of the insured
  • Uninsured losses incurred by the insured
  • Typically uninsured losses would include things such as your excess, hire of an alternative vehicle, money for repair of the third-party’s damage
  • Annual premium of £12.50

Many such policies will cover other countries such as Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, France, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Holland, Republic of Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, and Switzerland.

Keep in mind that campervan insurance in the UK is among the most expensive forms of car or motor home insurance for several reasons. For starters, most of the UK-based recreational vehicles are both owned and driven by experienced drivers. Therefore, the level of risk is very low. Typically, people that drive caravans and motor homes are not in such a rush so they tend to drive at a more leisurely pace.

If you think about it, a motor home is not something you buy and cruise around in. In reality, you probably use the motor home a few weeks and weekends a year, as shown by the UK statistics that the average caravan/motor home is driven just 5,000 miles a year. Because of this, the premiums are higher while the coverage remains great.
